Behaviour & Rewards

Rewarding pupils for effort, achievement and attendance is fundamental to the ethos of our school

The school’s rewards system is designed to be fair and transparent as well as allowing pupils to be recognised for their achievements. Communication between staff, pupils and parents is frequent, effective, efficient and consistent. Sanctions are fair and implemented fairly. There is considerable evidence to suggest that the giving of praise is one of the most effective ways of motivating children. Probably the most important form of praise is the praise given in a lesson by all staff. Regular comments are essential in encouraging pupils to participate and to motivate them to want to do better. It has been suggested that every pupil should receive five pieces of praise in every lesson. This is a tough target, but one that members of staff aspire to.

Alongside this informal recognition of effort, progress and achievement, RHSC staff implement the following formal rewards structure.

WHOLE SCHOOL REWARDS

MERITS

Pupils are awarded these in lessons, and they are recorded on Go4Schools. These are given to pupils who achieve high personal standards in their school work and/or behaviour as recognition of their efforts. It is anticipated that teachers give on average 1 – 3 merits per lesson and endeavour to use merits with all year groups. Pupils earn a positive behaviour point for each merit they receive.

TOKENS

Every term, pupils can exchange the positive behaviour points they have earned in lessons for prizes, such as canteen queue jump passes, lunchtime activities or sweets.

GOLDEN TICKETS

Each week, staff can nominate one pupil who has gone “above and beyond” in a certain area to receive a golden ticket. These areas include effort, classwork, teamwork, empathy, kindness, independence, communication and trying something new. Pupils who earn a golden ticket receive +5 positive points of Go4Schools, as well as a physical golden ticket to take home. Pupils are also entered a weekly golden ticket raffle to win a £10 voucher.
